What I would wear to my finance internship

From a former fashion student and current finance marketer ~ Jodi Pettersen

When Camilla asked me to write a guest post as to what I would recommend F3 interns to wear to their internship, I knew exactly what I would choose. I remember my first finance internship. My mum bought me two woollen suits from Veronica Maine that were quite expensive, at about $400 each (this was over 10 years ago!) I wore these two suits and swapped blouses. I had a single pair of heeled pumps. I was professional. This was perfectly suitable, if perhaps a touch formal. More than a decade has passed and fashion and business expectations have evolved. Once I started working in finance full time, I wore these suits for important meetings and started pairing dresses and jackets more often. My first lesson: dresses are easier and more comfy.

I also recognise that not everyone can buy expensive woollen suits. Luckily, they are not always necessary these days. In fact, wool sales have dropped in recent years for this reason. So, you have a budget and need to level up your wardrobe for your first internship. Many women in finance love wearing Scanlon and Theodore’s crepe knit suits or dresses. They are a staple, but pricey. Luckily many high street retailers have been making similar styles for much more affordable prices. Hint: search “crepe knit” or “milano knit” - this is the fabric you want. It is available at Seed, Witchery, Portmans, Myer, Country Road, even Target. You will find this fabric is structured, professional and smooths the silhouette. It hides all sins. It is also machine washable (cold, delicate cycle) meaning you save on dry cleaning. Here is a photo of Camilla and me, she’s wearing Scanlon and Theodore, I’m wearing a black Milano Knit dress from Basque, a Myer brand.

Very similar to this one, currently on sale for less than $100. What’s great about wearing a dress like this, you don’t need to buy a jacket. This is probably the cheapest way to look professional and chic. I bought this dress for about $100. There are also countless options when your search “crepe knit” or “Milano knit” on eBay for under $50. If you wanted more options, I would consider a crepe knit pencil skirt and a waterfall jacket. The waterfall jacket can be worn wrapped with a belt or open and can be bought at Portmans for well under $100. Do you already own a pair of plain black pants? Great! Pair it with a waterfall jacket. Do you already own a cardigan? Go full Rachel from suits and pair it with the pencil skirt. Milano tops with a peplum are very flattering, especially when you have had a big lunch. Pair with black pants or pencil skirt.

What about shoes and bags? Biggest tip: you do not need anything designer branded. A simple tote bag, a pair of heels and a pair of loafers is more than enough to start you off. Just make sure they’re in good condition (no scuffs!) and closed toe is best. Here’s some ideas:

My recent favourite (pricey but chic).

Lastly, use your accessories to stand out and don’t be afraid of colour! Your internship is your opportunity to stand out to potential employers and dressing as yourself, while professional, will help you get noticed.

Good luck in your internship!
