10 things I wish I knew when I started my first job after university

Ah the memories. The excitement with having finished uni and wondering about what to do next, the passion for wanting to put what you’ve just learned to good use and the trepidation about wondering where your career may take you.

Ask anyone on the street and ALOT of them will respond that they most likely are working in a career that they never expected to degree or otherwise. While yes there is sometimes a very clear path to a role and area (i.e. accounting) in today’s day and age it pays to be adaptable and have a growth mindset. Areas that could have a lot of demand today may not in 10-15 years time. If we at F3 can give any advice, here are 10 things we’ve learnt that we think are worth to keep in mind as you move from university into your first role and working career.

  1. Embrace a Growth Mindset: The learning curve in your first role can be steep, but remember that it's normal to make mistakes and encounter challenges. Embrace a growth mindset and see every experience as an opportunity for learning and personal growth. Be open to feedback and continuously seek ways to improve.

  2. Building Relationships Matters: The relationships you cultivate early on can have a significant impact on your career. Take the time to build genuine connections with colleagues, mentors, and industry professionals. Network, seek mentorship, and engage in collaborative projects to expand your professional circle.

  3. Seek Learning Opportunities: Never stop learning! Actively seek out opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge. Attend workshops, enroll in training programs, and take advantage of online resources. Look for mentors who can provide guidance and valuable insights to support your professional development.

  4. Embrace Adaptability: The ability to adapt is key in a fast-paced and ever-changing work environment. Embrace new technologies, methodologies, and industry trends. Be flexible, open-minded, and willing to step out of your comfort zone. Embracing change will position you for success.

  5. Time Management is Essential: Mastering time management is critical in your first role. Learn to prioritize tasks, set realistic deadlines, and create efficient workflows. Break down projects into smaller, manageable tasks, and leverage productivity tools or techniques like time blocking to optimize your productivity.

  6. Communication is Key: Developing strong communication skills will greatly benefit your professional journey. Practice active listening, ask thoughtful questions, and learn to convey your ideas clearly and concisely. Effective communication fosters collaboration, builds relationships, and boosts your professional impact.

  7. Take Ownership of Your Career: Your career trajectory is in your hands. Take ownership and be proactive in shaping your path. Set goals, seek feedback, and actively pursue opportunities for growth. Take on new projects, volunteer for additional responsibilities, and seek out mentorship to advance your career.

  8. Embrace a Positive Attitude: Maintaining a positive attitude can make a significant difference in your experience and professional relationships. Stay optimistic, remain adaptable, and approach challenges with a solution-oriented mindset. Your positive energy will not only benefit you but also inspire those around you.

  9. Emphasize Professionalism: Professionalism is a key attribute that can set you apart. Be punctual, dress appropriately, and maintain a high standard of integrity and ethics. Treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position, and demonstrate reliability, accountability, and a strong work ethic.

  10. Remember to Take Care of Yourself: Amidst the demands of your professional journey, don't forget to prioritize self-care. Find a balance between work and personal life, engage in activities that bring you joy and recharge your energy. Prioritize your mental and physical well-being to sustain long-term success.

So while some of the above may appear daunting, just remember you’re at one of the most exciting and eye opening times in your life. In embracing a growth mindset, building relationships, seeking learning opportunities, and prioritizing self-care, you'll lay a strong foundation for a successful career. Remember, you are capable, resilient, and destined for great things. Embrace the journey, learn from every experience, and enjoy the ride and best of luck on your professional path!
